Chelmno Land or Culmland (Polish: Ziemia Chełmińska, German: Kulmerland, Kulmer Land, Culmerland or Culmer Land) is the traditional name for a district around the city of Chełmno (Kulm), now in north-western Poland.
In 10th century Chelmno Land (south of the Osa River) was inhabited by the lekhitic tribes of Kuyavians and Masovians.
In the Middle Ages Chelmno Land was a subject to constant raids of the pagan Prussians.

Chelmno, where the genocide began at the end of 1941 with three mobile gas vans, became a cemetery for the Jews of the Warta region, the Lodz Ghetto as well as some coming from Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia.
Chelmno was a seperate camp, albeit committed to exterminating the Jews and Gypsies in selected areas.
It seems fairly probable that the Chelmno -operations and Globocnik's empire of death were administratively separate actions, although both had their roots in the Euthanasia -operations.

Chelmno, also known as Kulmhof, was a small town roughly 50 miles from the city of Lodz.
It was here that the first mass killings of Jews by gas took place as part of the "Final Solution." The murder process was set up by a "Sonderkommando," under the command of Herbert Lange.
Lange's unit comprised 15-20 men of the SIPO and about 80-100 men of the "Schutzpolizei." They took over a run-down castle in Chelmno and converted it into their base camp with barracks and a reception area for deportees.

Location of the six NS camps generally designated as 'Extermination Camps': Chelmno, Treblinka, Sobibor, Majdanek, Belzec and Auschwitz; Chelmno allegedly was the smallest and 'most insignificant' one of all.
In this report, which was prepared by or according to eyewitnesses, it says that the Jewish population of the vicinity of Lodz was not transported to Chelmno, but to the forests of Zagorow in the time between October 1941 and the beginning of January 1942.
According to other authors, the report about Chelmno, which allegedly was given to Ringelblum by Grojanowski, came from a "small group of grave diggers," which escaped in January 1942 from Chelmno and gave it to Dr. Ringelblum and his secret documentation center in Warsaw.

I first came to Chelmno on Corpus Christi Day, a spring religious holiday when Poles flock to the streets and join long processions in cities and villages across the country.
The thick fragrance of rose petals strewn across the ground mingled in the air with homilies broadcast from the village church, beckoning parishioners who knelt in prayer on the asphalt-covered main thoroughfare.
The first camp where mass executions were carried out using gas, Chelmno was a testing ground for the Nazis looking to develop increasingly efficient methods to carry out their "final solution." Between 1941 and 1945, as many as 300,000 adults and children, mostly Polish Jews, were executed and cremated here.
