  Chelmsford Cathedral, its treasures, history, and information for visitors
The Cathedral of St. Mary, St. Peter and St. Cedd Chelmsford is a parish church as well as the Mother Cathedral church for the whole Chelmsford diocese of Essex and five Eastern London Boroughs.
It became a Cathedral in 1914 when the new Diocese of Chelmsford was created to meet the needs of the growing population east of London and has welcomed pilgrims and worshippers over the centuries.
On the outside of the Cathedral, at the foot of the battlements, are 16 stone carvings representing the history and concerns of Chelmsford, and the church.

 The Chelmsford Singers - History
The Chelmsford Singers staged a concert in honour of his eightieth birthday in 1965 and sang at his memorial service in the Cathedral in 1966.
In this 1951 photograph of the Chelmsford Singers Stanley Vann is seated tenth from the left, flanked by William Bush, founder and first conductor of the choir and Mr Arthur Woolford, for many years the Singers' non-singing chairman.
A number of Chelmsford families have retained close family ties with the Singers, for example the Hickman family and the Emmisons and, most notably, the Woolford family.

This Carol Service was the Cathedral's own service in response to their congregation who just wanted an opportunity to get together and sing carols.
Previously the band has sat to one side of the Chancel but on this occasion we were seated in the middle of the Cathedral in front of the Altar The next difference was the acoustics.
At the end of a very enjoyable evening the band was thanked by all of the Cathedral Clergy team and asked to return next year Interestingly, I think out of all the events that we did this year I have heard as many comments about how enjoyable the Cathedral Carol Service was as anything else.

Chelmsford Cathedral has the distinction of being the first Anglican Cathedral in England to commission a new organ for some three decades.
The Nave Organ was built on a specially constructed gallery at the west end of the Cathedral.

Thomas Hooker was born of Puritan parents in the county of Leicestershire in 1586.
His reputation as a gifted preacher spread through England causing the folks of Chelmsford to invite him to be their "lecturer." As lecturer he was to preach to the community on market days and assist in the preaching on Sundays.
Chelmsford had a reputation as a place full of alehouses and drunkenness, but under the influence of Hooker's godly preaching the town was changed for the better.

Chelmsford Cathedral on 20 October, when he directed Choral Evensong from Chelmsford in a broadcast relayed live by BBC Radio 3.

The ESO has rehearsed and performed with the Chelmsford Singers over the years and 2004 saw a revival of this co-operation with a joint performance of Haydn's Creation under Peter Nardone in the Cathedral in December.
Over the years we have been able to bring the finest soloists to Chelmsford and we are pleased to have provided a platform for many young talented artists, both from Essex and from the national scene, through the good offices of the Countess of Munster Trust.
Most of our concerts are given in Christ Church, New London Road, Chelmsford, but we also play regularly in the Essex Musical Association's annual concert, usually in Thaxted Church, and in special events at venues such as Cressing Temple and Chelmsford Cathedral.

The Foundation was the brainchild of the Provost John Moses and Dr Graham Elliott at the time of the organ appeal in the early 1990s with the intention that there should be a capital fund of £500,000 from the appeal to enable the bursaries to be paid.
However, I am pleased to be part of a team under Peter, which is furthering the development of the English Cathedral choral tradition here in Chelmsford without the benefits of a specific choir school and of extensive endowments.
Shortly before I came to Chelmsford, it was agreed by the various Cathedral committees that a house suitable for three choral scholars and one organ scholar should be purchased.
