The task of the Ecole nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (Ensad), founded in 1766, is the artistic, scientific and technical training of creative students capable of designing, promoting and developing all manner of works in the field of decorative arts, and the direction of research in the same sectors.

Art was taught from the beginning of the Polytechnic, and included design, weaving, embroidery and electrodeposition.
On 1 January 1957 the college was designated a College of Advanced Technology, and became known as Chelsea College of Science and Technology.

The special collections at Chelsea College of Art and Design are used for teaching and learning in support of the main library collection.
In 1964 two existing art schools, the School of Art, part of Chelsea Polytechnic, and the Polytechnic School of Art based in Great Titchfield Street, W1, merged to create a new Chelsea School of Art in purpose built premises at Manresa Road, Chelsea.
