Chelsea,_Manhattan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Chelsea takes its name from the Federal-style house which was the birthplace of Clement Clarke Moore, who is credited with "A Visit From St. Nicholas," which he may have authored, more often than with the first Greek and Hebrew lexicons printed in the United States, which he certainly authored.
"Chelsea" stood surrounded by its gardens on a full block between 9th and 10th Avenues south of 23rd Street until it was replaced by high quality row houses in the mid-19th century.
Chelsea was briefly at the center of a media circus when Sid Vicious (a member of the rock group the Sex Pistols) was charged with the murder of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen on October 12, 1978, while staying in the Hotel Chelsea.

Girls who successfully complete this weekend program are better equipped to make decisions about sexual activity, pregnancy and childcare.

The Chelsea Girls was reviewed in The New York Times and many another venue, raked in a cool (for Warhol) $300,000 in six months of exhibition, and became one of the gaudiest baubles on the charm bracelet of the urban culture vulture circa 1966.--Gary Morris http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/37/chelsea.htm
In a sense The Chelsea Girls is the testament of that class, the Iliad of the underground.
The Chelsea Girls, which was the first Underground film to surface up to an art house showing and is so far the masterpiece of the "Baudelairean Cinema," sets out the cosmogony within which a good part of the Underground Cinema takes place.

Twelve 35-minute mini-movies were shot, in various rooms of the Chelsea Hotel (and a couple of apartments), with no editing, the camera mostly as still as a cadaver (but occasionally twirling around a room or zooming in and out).
And if The Chelsea Girls didn't show penetration (there is full-frontal male nudity for penis-spotters, however), it did offer some unforgettably camp tableaux of S&M dykes, hustler queens, phony popes, mute chanteuses, hopheads and all sorts of other chattering miscreants engaging in every kind of antisocial activity imaginable.

But with "Chelsea Girls," we see Warhol the filmmaker in transition, between silence and sound, between fl and white and color, between girls and boys, between amphetamines and acid, between the avant-garde and narrative, between home movies and Hollywood, between the underground and the mainstream.
She calls the other girl with her "Joe" and she verbally berates her and the woman under the desk, who presumably has asked or paid to be kept there.
And as Warhol and "Chelsea Girls" blurs the line between fantasy and reality, between art and the cinema, between acting and "being," the visual image is blurred literally as well.

Chelsea supremo Roman Abramovich will have a first League title to celebrate after the Blues women’s team, of which the Russian billionaire is chairman, set themselves up to win the Southern Division of the FA Nationwide Women’s Premier League.
A crushing 10-0 victory over Enfield Town put Chelsea nine points ahead of the only club who could catch them, Portsmouth, with both sides having only three games left and the Blues holding a vastly superior goal difference; 46 to Pompey’s 15.
So the joyful post-match scenes in the Chelsea camp, whose title success when soon confirmed will earn them promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history, were only a tad premature.

Menken is one of Warhol’s few grande dames but one of several of his troupe who can maintain a harridan pose — perhaps because that’s what she was — seemingly forever, impervious to all notions of good taste or restraint.
The Chelsea Girls was one of Warhol’s last pure “art” films (in the style of Empire, Sleep, etc.) before collaborator Paul Morrissey’s business-minded ways took over and created the more commercial “Warhol films” — Lonesome Cowboys, Trash, Heat, etc. — that maintained some of the art and made much more money.

ArtForum: September 1971 - Stephen Koch's review, Andy Warhol's film "Chelsea Girls" - Brief Article
Chelsea Girls (Motion picture) / Criticism, interpretation, etc.
Perhaps the article that most fully embodied the translated "level of discourse" Michelson envisioned was Stephen Koch's tour-de-force dissection of Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls (the essay would become a pivotal chapter in the critic's 1973 book Stargazer, a new edition of which is forthcoming from Marion Boyars).
Koch's Warhol indeed provides the denouement to Michelson's special issue: The filmmaker is seen to lay claim to the strong current of modernism in the avant-garde cinema of the period, a claim that entails both continuity with and development of the work of exemplary predecessors and a squaring with the aesthetic issues of the day.

THE DEFINITIVE STATEMENT from Andy Warhol's intermediate adventures in filmmaking – between early silent efforts and the later features that for all practical purposes were "by" Paul Morrissey – Chelsea Girls remains overwhelming on almost every level.
This may all seem very camp now, but it was incredibly "dirty" to mainstream critics suddenly forced to confront underground cinema – which Girls brought overground by transferring to select commercial venues.
Crystallizing the methadrine negative-creepiness that distinguished Big Apple counterculture from the larger nation's lysergic flower-child vibe, it's both bedlam and boredom, voyeurism and sexual loathing, a party for burned-out society B-girls and sad sinewy rent boys.
