THE 2001 Cheltenham Festival was abandoned yesterday after racing officials received confirmation from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food that the world famous home of National Hunt racing is within a foot and mouth exclusion zone.
The prestigious three-day meeting was due to be run from March 13-15 but had to be rescheduled to April 17-19 when the track could not comply with MAFF instructions regarding livestock being present on site 28 days before a race meeting.
Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham's managing director, was bitterly disappointed.
