 Historic La Mott Pennsylvania -- The Growth of the Village
By 1900, the school was enlarged to five rooms and an annex, and was described, "In points of location, arrangement and equipment one of the finest properties, which Cheltenham owned." Originally the building housed students from the first through ninth grades, bug was later changed to the eighth grade and then to the sixth grade.
In 1940 the school was closed and the children transported to Shoemaker Grammar School in Ogontz, the Myers Grammar School in Melrose, and to the junior and senior high schools in Elkins Park.

It is possible that the shot of pupils emerging into the school yard is their departure on the final day of the Spring Term 1965 and thus the final school day in the High Street.
Thus the 'new' Cheltenham Grammar School (for boys) was demolished in 1996 having been replaced by the even newer Pate's Grammar School (with boys and girls since Secondary School Reorganisation in Cheltenham in 1986).
The 'old' school had been a typically Victorian structure whereas the 'new' school designed by the London Architects Chamberlin Powell and Bon (who also designed the Barbican in the City of London) was somewhat typical of 1960's architecture although the extensive use of load bearing brick was unusual for the time in a public building.

In 1947, Brian went to Dean Close Junior School, near Lansdown Road, Cheltenham, followed by Pates Grammar School in 1953, which was situated in what is now the High Street, Cheltenham.
Brian played clarinet in the school orchestra at Pates Grammar, but, by the time he was 14, Brian was becoming interested in Jazz.

This ten week science club, co-funded by the Sutton Trust and the Ogden Trust, is a partnership between Durham High School for Girls and a cluster of primary schools in County Durham and the Education Action Zone of Easington and Peterlee.
The project is centred on Pate's Grammar School in Cheltenham, and involves 130 children.
This programme, which links state and independent schools in curricular and other projects, has developed enormously since the Sutton Trust first proposed supporting such partnerships to the Department for Education in 1997 and co-funded the first projects in 1998.
