He was commissioner for railways in the McCulloch (q.v.) ministry from June 1863 to September 1864 and then became president of the board of lands and works and commissioner of crown lands and survey from September 1864 to May 1868.
Several of his water-colours were shown at the Melbourne exhibition of 1866-7, and in 1869 he was commissioned by the trustees of the Melbourne public library to do 40 water-colour drawings illustrating the diggings in the fifties.
He was minister of railways in the shortlived Service (q.v.) ministry, and when Service returned to power in March 1883 had the same office, and in addition was minister of public instruction.

It is at this point that the railway from Melbourne to Echuca attains its greatest elevation, and the line can be quitted at the Woodend or at the Macedon station for the purpose of exploring the more accessible portions of the mountain.

 Melbourne's Tramway History.
The second electric tramway in Melbourne's suburbs was opened on the 11th October 1906 and ran from Flemington Bridge (near the terminus of the North Melbourne cable tram route) to Essendon, with a branch to Saltwater River (Now Maribyrnong River) and a short spur along Puckle St Moonee Ponds, to Moonee Ponds railway station.
The first tramway to operate in Melbourne was an isolated line from Fairfield railway station.
The lease of the cable trams by the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Co. expired on 30th June, 1916 and it was decided to appoint an interim Melbourne Tramways Trust to operate the system until it was decided what to do about the growing problems of street passenger transport in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

The lines were to run from Sandringham station along the coast road to Beaumaris and thence inland to Cheltenham railway station, with a branch from Beaumaris continuing down the coast road to Mordialloc.
The body of 35 was recovered for restoration by SPER (South Pacific Electric Railway) (stored at Bylands — 2003), and finally the TMSV has been in possession of the body of 34 since closure of the Brighton line.
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways recommended an extension of the railway to South Sandringham in 1910, but this was later vetoed as a result of the projected high cost of land resumptions.

The State Government is evaluating the feasibility of establishing a new railway station at Southland, Cheltenham to help improve public transport patronage in suburban Melbourne.
However, a new station would add one minute to the journey time between Melbourne and Frankston, and initial estimates predict the cost of constructing a new station would be between $10 and $14 million.

Mentone station was called Beaumaris in the original contract for its construction, however it was known as Balcombe Rd from the day it began operating until September 1, 1882, when the work ‘road’ was dropped from its title.
These instruments were worked by the station staff who also controlled the signals at each station by hand and the driver of each train proceeded or stopped, according to the signal.

The name comes from Highetts road, the name of the railway station which was built when the line from Caulfield to Mordialloc was opened in 1881.
Notwithstanding the presence of a railway station Highett remained an agricultural district with a small township for longer than its neighbours.

When the railway extension from Caulfield to Frankston was opened in 1881 a station was provided at Moorabbin, but most excursionists made for Mentone and Mordialloc where there were seaside amusements, fishing and game-shooting.
In December, 1949, metropolitan Melbourne gained a second general airport when the one inland from Mentone and Mordialloc was opened.
The area between Bentleigh and Moorabbin was filled with residential subdivisions and the Victorian Railways opened the Patterson station in 1960.
