Turtles of the World > Species: Family Platysternidae (Big-headed turtles)
Most authorities recognize Platysternidae as a separate family, but Romer (1956) regarded it as only a subfamily (Platysterninae) of the large family Testudinidae, in which he also included tortoises and batagurids.
More recently, Gaffney (1975a) regarded it a tribe (Platysternini) of Chelydridae on the basis of the decreasing jugal exposure and lateral skull emargination, and the increase in temporal roofing.
Some of these that received strong bootstrap support indicated the families Chelydridae and Platysternidae form a monophyletic unit, and based on that, Shaffer et al.

BioMed Central | Full text | The complete mitochondrial genome of the enigmatic bigheaded turtle (Platysternon): ...
Platysternon was traditionally considered to be close to snapping turtles (Chelydridae) based on some studies of its morphology and mitochondrial (mt) DNA, however, other studies of morphology and nuclear (nu) DNA do not support that hypothesis.
We sequenced the complete mt genome of Platysternon and the nearly complete mt genomes of two other relevant turtles and compared them to turtle mt genomes from the literature to form the largest molecular dataset used to date to address this issue.
The resulting phylogeny robustly rejects the placement of Platysternon with Chelydridae, but instead shows that it is a member of the Testudinoidea, a diverse, nearly globally-distributed group that includes pond turtles and tortoises.

 Turtle Molecular Phylogeny
The two marine turtle families (Dermochelyidae+Cheloniidae) are clearly a natural group, the Chelonioidea.
Also, the Asian big-headed turtle (Platysternon) is clearly shown to be a member of the snapping turtle family Chelydridae (Gaffney, 1975).
On major conflict between the molecular evidence and previous morphological studies is the purported monophyly of the large superfamily Trionychoidea (Trionychidae, Carettochelyidae, Kinosternidae and Dermatemydidae).

 Big-Headed Turtle (Platysternidae)
Agassiz originally grouped this turtle with the snapping turtles, but subsequent authors placed Platysternon in its own group.
More recently, Eugene Gaffney grouped Platysternon with the Chelydridae (snapping turtles) based on a number of morphological features of the skull (Gaffney, 1975).
Evidence gathered from examining chromosomes of various species indicates that the Big-headed turtle most closely resembles the batagurine group of turtles (the Old World pond turtles including such turtles as Chinemys and Cuora) (Haiduk and Bickman, 1982), as chromosomes vary more between Platysternon and the chelydrids than they do between Platysternon and the batagurines.
