	Quileute - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Quileute tribe linguistically belongs to the Chimakuan family of languages among Northwest Coast indigenous peoples.
		The Quileute language is one of a kind, as the only related aboriginal people to the Quileute, the Chemakum, were wiped out by Chief Seattle and the Suquamish people during the 1860s.
		The Quileute language is one of only five known languages to not have any nasal sounds (m, n).

		The former was determined to have been equally as likely to be affiliated with the Chemakum as with the Clallam, while the latter was determined to be culturally affiliated with the Clallam based on the sum of the available evidence.

	Myron Eells
		Eells eventually equipped the Smithsonian Institution with the vocabularies from the Chemakum, upper and lower Chehalis, Clallam, and Twana tribes, the Skwaksin dialect of the Niskwalli people, and Chinook Jargon.
		Among his published writings were Hymns in the Chinook Jargon Languages (1879), Ten Years at Skokomish (1886), Twana, Clallum, and Chemakum Indians of Washington Territory (1886-1887), and over 1250 news paper articles, pamphlets, and letters for the Smithsonian Institution and for popular and mission-orientated magazines.
		Eells' most extensive and comprehensive unpublished work was The Indians of the Puget Sound which was a compilation of six volumes consisting of sketches, notes, and pieces from his published works.

		She rarely spoke Chemakum at the time of the interview, saving the dying language for her brother, the last man who spoke Chemakum.
		According to Boas, she was "somewhat addicted to liquor, and as she herself and the white man with whom she lived indulged alternately in their libations, the conditions for the collections of good linguistic material were not very favorable" (37).

		The federal government promised the services of a physician, flsmith, carpenter, and farmer to teach necessary skills, and a school was also to be provided.

		It was spoken until the 1940s on east side of the Olympic Peninsula between Port Townsend and Hood Canal.
		The name Chemakum is an Anglicized version of a Salishan word for the Chemakum people, such as the nearby Twana word Čə́bqəb [ʧə́bqəb].
		It is spoken by a few people south of the Makah on the western coast of the Olympic peninsula south of Cape Flattery at La Push and the lower Hoh River.

		The Klallam, Chemakum, and Twana occupied the land around "Kah-Tai", the present-day Port Townsend.
		Since this headland had little running water, it is unlikely that any tribe used the future Port Townsend area as a permanent village.
		The Chemakums lived on land from Discovery Bay to the mouth of Hood Canal.

		American Indian tribes located in what is now Jefferson County in the mid-19th century included the Chemakum (or Chimacum), Hoh (a group of the Quileute), Klallam (or Clallam), Quinault and Twana (the Kilcid band - Anglicized: Quilcene).
		There is only one reservation (created in 1893) in Jefferson County: the Hoh occupy 640 acres on the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Hoh River on the west end.
