Singer/guitarist Emma Pollock completed the lineup, and after founding Chemikal Underground the quartet issued its debut effort "Monica Webster" in February 1995, earning "Single of the Week" honors in Melody Maker.
After issuing the Lazarwalker EP on the Radar imprint, the Delgados returned to Chemikal Underground for the 1996 release of the single "Cinecentre." Two more singles, "Under Canvas Under Wraps" and "Sucrose," as well as a U.K. tour in support of Elastica, preceded the October bow of their first full-length effort, Domestiques.
The album's near-unanimous critical acclaim was echoed by the BBC's influential John Peel, who christened the Delgados "the best in Britain." Named "Single of the Week" by both Melody Maker and the NME, the remarkable "Everything Goes Around the Water" heralded the release of the band's sophomore album, 1998's Peloton.

"Chemikal Underground was never going to be a vehicle for The Delgados only," states Paul, clearly; The Delgados even recorded their next single on London indie Che Records, ostensibly to help Chemikal Underground foster an identity independent of The Delgados, and also to see how other labels operated.
The second release on Chemikal Underground was by electro-pop trio Bis.
It's an arrogant attitude that has certainly paid off, for as idiosyncratic as Chemikal Underground's signings have been, the label has quite definitely captured, even dictated, the zeitgeist for underground rock throughout the 90s.

The cost of Chemikal Underground's second release, the single "Disco Nation 45" by Bis, left the cash-strapped label unable to afford another release by The Delgados, so their next release "Lazarwalker" came from the London-based Radar Records.

This Glasgow quartet has set the bar for their own music quite high, thanks to the quality of the artists featured on their own Chemikal Underground label, which include fellow Scots Mogwai and Arab Strap, and happily, their intricately textured, unpredictable indie pop is just really, really bloody good.
The group has been at it for nearly half a decade now, issuing a steady stream of glorious releases crammed full of dreamy, guitar-propelled, ever-so-slightly Celtic folk-flavored scraps of pastoral paradise.
The Delgados have also released Domestiques, their 1997 debut full-length, and numerous shorter players on Chemikal Underground.

"Tempered; Not Tamed" off The Delgados' 1997 debut album, Domestiques, begins with a French-language shoutout to Chemikal Underground Records.
The band wasn't just promoting the label that their core songwriting duo, Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward, started in the early 90s; they were also giving props to the then-nascent Scottish scene, which included Chemikal signees Arab Strap, Bis, and Mogwai, and which peaked during the latter part of that decade.
It seems odd to compare these early songs to the band's more recent work, as they could belong to another band entirely.
