 Hero (2002) - Archives - tribe.net
Chen's film is more fact-based and grounded in realistic imagery than Zhang's abstract and fantastical Hero: The assassin Jing Ke in Chen's film was a real historical character whereas all the assassins in Hero are imaginary creations with superhuman powers.
Nonetheless, Chen's king too conceives of unification as the route to ending centuries of warfare among the states, and faces a similar dilemma as Zhang's king in grappling with the fate of Nameless.
When Chen's king hesitates to put to death his prime minister Lü Buwei (who may be his real-life father), he is reminded by a Qin official of his duties to the Qin ruling house's centuries-old goal of unifying China.

For a movie that in essence is tying up loose ends, this conclusion to the excellent Infernal Affairs trilogy still has a few surprises up its wire-concealing sleeve.
Ming's metaphorical descent into hell, and Yan's mirrored rise to heaven are brought out by psychiatrist Dr. Lee (Kelly Chen), allowing this third instalment an additional level of surrealism in a number of notable scenes that the other two parts couldn't have benefited from.
The musical score by Kwong Wing Chan is also partly responsible for allowing the movie to reach a broader intensity, with key themes returning that have significance for the main characters.

Zhang Yimou's next film, House of Flying Daggers, which continues his kung fu career make-over, will be released by Sony Pictures Classics this December.
Also recommended, though not as compelling as Hero (and certainly not in any sense an action movie), is Chen Kaige's epic The Emperor and the Assassin, which provides some additional historical context, despite also being fictionalized.

HelloZiyi.us - Hero review by Michael Wilmington
Based on the historical legend of China's first emperor--the same tale that inspired Chen Kaige's "The Emperor and the Assassin"--"Hero" is a wild and lovely fantasia: a feast of lavish visuals and a heart-stopping explosion of cinema pyrotechnics and fight choreography that, in scene after scene, leaves you almost breathless.
Zhang's movie is set 2,200 years ago, during the reign of the King of Qin (Chen Daoming), the emperor who united China and built the Great Wall.
Everything is wildly out of scale, loony and exaggerated--yet so masterfully deigned and executed, by Zhang in the dramatic scenes and action director Tony Ching Siu-tung ("Chinese Ghost Story") in the duels and battle scenes, that you're always firmly in this film's grip.

Slant Magazine - Film Review: Infernal Affairs I, II, and III
Lau and Mak's camera is perpetually restless throughout the three films, as is the editing by Danny Pang (co-director of Bangkok Dangerous and The Eye), whose major contribution to their MTV-style aesthetic is eulogizing every death with fl-and-white flashback montages set to corny love songs.
Pop star Edison Chen and model Shawn Yue, who played Lau and Yan via flashbacks in the first Infernal Affairs, reprise their roles in Infernal Affairs II, but still play second fiddle to actors Anthony Wong and Eric Tsang.
Lau struggles to keep a lid on his identity at the police station, fearing that the ruthless Yeung (Leon Lai) may be gunning for him, while a wasted Leung plays tiddlywinks with Kelly Chen when Wong's superintendent character advises Lau to get his anger in check.

He discovers that another cop, Yeung (Leon Lai of Fallen Angels), quickly rising through the ranks of the police department, has a mysterious link to Shen (Chen Daoming of Hero), who was apparently Sam's (Eric Tsang) connection to the mainland.
It's a tricky proposition because Yeung also seems to suspect Ming, and appears to have the same goal in mind.
With the help of Dr. Lee (Kelly Chen), Yan's psychiatrist, Ming looks deeper into Yan's final days, and flashbacks explore the undercover cop's dealings with both Yeung and Shen.

I see no reason why Western audiences would not be enthused by this movie; the story is built on many intriguing layers, but the basic plot is seemingly easy to understand.

Quin is the largest and most powerful of the Six Kingdoms, and the king's dreams of unification have been stymied for years because of the dangers posed by these deadly assassins.

Real emotion and passion is evoked through the powerful relationship between Broken Sword and Flying Snow (Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung), and even a minor character like Moon (Zhang Ziyi) has a memorable presence.
The flashback structure, which finds Jet Li and Chen Daoming engaging in a storytelling tte--tte, is handled with such confidence that there's never any confusion as the story slips in and out of the past and present.
Much of the credit for this goes to the film's amazing use of color, which not only distinguishes the various stories from one another but also serves as the underlying force behind the vibrant imagery.
