Moreover, Chen Shuibian's intentions for this referendum have been crystal clear from the start: this is a practice run for a referendum on a new constitution in 2006.
Chen was urging the Taiwanese people to remain calm and that Taiwan's national security is under control, while Annette was talking about how things have to go forward as normal.

Chen Zau-nan, a member of the DPP’s Central Executive Committee, suggested that it might be replaced with a phrase indicating that Taiwan is an "sovereign independent country." Beijing has for many years criticized the DPP, claiming that there is only one China and that Taiwan is a part of it.
Analysts are currently speculating about the implications of these gestures and the possibility that Chen Shui-bian’s recent victory might result in closer rather than more distant relations between Taiwan and mainland China.
