The synagogue was built in 1614 A.D and is in a peaceful wooded area.
Chendamangalam has an average literacy rate of 86%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 87% and female literacy of 85%.

There is one of a Jewish lady, dated 1264 A.D. The Jews arrived in Chendamangalam after the destruction of the second temple and the final desolation of Jerusalem in (A.D. 69) and founded a colony.
Chendamangalam is an excellent tourist destination in Kerala.

At the time of independence, there were seven active synagogues in the princely State of Cochin and one in the State of Travancore: three in Cochin, two in Ernakulam, and one each in Parur, Chendamangalam and Mala.
The Mala Synagogue (1597) was donated to the town council of elders for use as a community center by the Jewish community when they moved to Israel en masse in 1952.
