The Reverend Oren Burbank Cheney is honored as the founder and first president of Bates.
Cheney steered through the Maine Legislature a bill creating a corporation for educational purposes initially called the Maine State Seminary, located in Lewiston, Maine's fastest-growing industrial and commercial center.
Cheney assembled a six-person faculty dedicated to teaching the classics and moral philosophy to both men and women.

Oren Burbank Cheney was born in 1816 in Holderness, New Hampshire, to prominent abolitionist parents.
Influenced particularly by his mother, Cheney developed core beliefs in the causes of abolitionism and temperance, and these were unswerving values throughout his life as an abolitionist, teacher, Freewill Baptist minister, state legislator, editor of The Morning Star abolitionist paper and founder and president of Bates College.
In 1863, Cheney petitioned the Maine Legislature for a change in the charter to permit a collegiate course of study.

CAPTAIN THADDEUS F. Captain Thaddeus F. Burbank was born September 13, 1841, at Collins Center, Erie County, N.Y., and is the son of Daniel and Lucinda (Stuart) Burbank, natives of New York and Massachusetts, respectively.
Daniel Burbank spent the greater part of his days as a dyer, and departed this life June 29, 1870, being survived by his wife, who died January 2, 1897.
On October 21, 1865, Captain Burbank was married to Miss Albertenia A. Sanford, daughter of Capt. George E. Sanford, of Portland, Maine, who was a salt-water sailor many years, and with whom Captain Burbank sailed considerably.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1700 Pennsylvania Ave., Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814.

Throughout, we have seen a change in presidents, from those who were focused on creating Bates to the one now in office who is ensuring a healthy future where the objectives of a residential college are carried out to the fullest.
In 1855, Oren Burbank Cheney founded Bates College as the Maine State Seminary.
Yes, we have all heard that on the tour, but what is not mentioned is that although Cheney was an abolitionist, he was also a prohibitionist and probably turns over in his grave every time a bottle is opened on campus.

There were two Person Cheneys - Person b 1801 married Anne Morrison, he was brother to Moses Cheney b 1793 who was married to Abigail Morrison.
The Morrisons and Cheneys were active in the undergrownd railroad in Mass and NH/ME. Moses Cheney was the Deacon of the Baptist Church in Ashland and there are several stained glass panels in the church with information on the family on a plaque below.
Person, son of Moses was Gov of NH 1875 and his brother Oren Burbank Cheney b 1816 was founder of Bates College in Maine.
