After a visit to the front, Yuan was appointed second-class secretary in the Board of War, promoted almost immediately to secretary, and supplied with funds for enlisting troops.
Yuan Chonghuan worked harmoniously with the commander-in-chief Sun Chengzong and pushed the frontiers steadily northward, fortifying Ningyuan in 1623.
In 1625 Sun was recalled and replaced by Gao Ti, who ordered a general retreat to Shanhaiguan, but Yuan flatly refused to leave Ningyuan.

After performing in 2 concerts on Saturday, I finally attended this highly anticipated concert of the Chinese piano master Yin Chengzong.
Seriously, only a countable number of pianists deserve the title ¡®master¡¯ nowadays, and Chinese pianist is even rarer (including Lang Lang and Yundi Li).
He would just kinda ¡®collapse¡¯ after a piece on the chair and it seemed so comfy, heehee.

In all its incarnations, the concerto is in four movements; & manages to integrate all of the best bits of Xian's cantata (the Ode is particularly well realised).
Of the collective of composers involved in the composition of The Yellow River (piano concerto), only Sheng Lihong seems to have established much of a reputation as a composer (Yin Chengzong is primarily known as a pianist; although some of his piano pieces are included on the Marco Polo recording mentioned above).
Two works by Sheng which seem worthy of investigation are the Song of the Sea (symphonic poem) & the intriguingly titled orchestral suite, Lament of the Negro Slaves....
