I have travelled through Chennai airport on several occasions in the last 3 years and have found it to be best in India, so I am surprised by many of the comments.
Outside the airport there are umpteen beggars, taxi drivers, touts and the lot trying to ask one where he is going and whteher their luggage needs to be carried - even if it were a small backpack.
The Chennai railway station was in a better condition compared to the airport, with its mucky smell and all.

NEW DELHI: Chennai is fast emerging as a conduit for smuggling through air, edging out Mumbai, with the value of seized goods from its international airport up by 30 per cent to Rs 26 crore in 2001-02, according to intelligence sources.
The value of seized goods from the international airport was Rs 20 crore in 2000-01 with intelligence sleuths detecting smuggling in gold, foreign currency, narcotics and electronic goods.
From Mumbai international airport, the value of seized smuggled goods was Rs 17 crore in the last fiscal, down by over 26 per cent from Rs 23 crore in 2000-01, indicating the increased vigilance on this zone apparently due to its strategic location and presence of many "illegal" networks.
