MRTS is an initialism for Mass Rapid Transit System usually referring to a particular system of suburban rail network in Chennai with tracks running on a raised platform.
The frequency of the MRTS is also less than that of the suburban lines, though the headway is expected to come down after the stretch to Velachery is completed.
This is because the MRTS is considered to be an elevated extension of the Suburban Network and not a Metro System, as such.

Just when everybody had given up hope of commuting comfortably in Chennai, without getting caught in traffic snarls, Southern Railway commenced passenger train services on a single line basis in the MRTS section between Mylapore and Tiruvanmiyur on Republic Day and delivered them from their troubles.
The Railway Ministry took the responsibility of implementing the first phase of MRTS from Chennai Beach to Mylapore, a stretch of 8.96 km with 2.75 km on the surface and 6.21 km on an elevated stretch, in 1983-84.
As per plans, MRTS phase-II is to run up to Velachery and efforts are being taken by the Ministry of Railways to clear all the problems in the section beyond Tiruvanmiyur.

The MRTS was supposed to be the answer to Chennai's public transportation problems, what with the exponential growth in the city's population and the congestion on the roads.
The MRTS was conceived after a study by the Madras Area Transport Study Unit (MATSU), which identified eight important transport corridors, of which the 39-km north-south-east corridor along the Buckingham Canal was shortlisted.
The total length of entire MRTS envisaged was 59.38 km, a circular route from Chennai Beach to Ennore/Tiruvottiyur (industrial zones north of Chennai).

On Monday, got to travel by the Chennai MRTS upto Chengleput and returned by the Broad Guage that terminates upto the Beach.
MRTS doesn't reach to Chengalpattu - it is just plain ol' suburban electric you had travelled by - even if the same rake goes.
And yes, the value systems, hygene and sanitation-awareness of aam janatha being what it is, it is a herculian task to keep the trains and stations to a reasonable level of cleanliness.

 Metroblogging Chennai: Truck runs on Railway Track at MRTS, Chennai
On Sunday last when I visited Velachery MRTS Railway Station, I saw 2 trucks stationed on the Track and one JCB loader was loading blue metal in the Trucks for laying ballast along the track.
On reaching closer to the Trucks, I found that both the Trucks were re-engineered to run on the Track.
One worker at Velachery Station tells me that after the Railway Safety Commissioner's inspection which is to commence on May 15, 2007, the much awaited MRTS service between Tiruvanmiyur and Velachery is expected to be launched on June 3, 2007.
