A study shows that the Cheomseongdae, an ancient astronomical observatory in Gyeongju designated a National Treasure, tilts 7.2 cm to the north and 2.4 cm to the east.
The subsidence of the observatory, built during the reign of Shilla Queen Seondeok (632-646), is so bad that it is visible with the naked eye, but it had never been accurately measured.
Shon said that it was as yet unclear if the observatory has been gradually subsiding over hundreds of years or whether the tilt is accelerating, but local residents say the tilt has grown worse since the Korean War.
