Cheong Wa Dae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cheong Wa Dae (or the Blue House) is the executive office and official residence of the South Korean head of state, the President of the Republic of Korea.
In 1993, after President Kim Young-sam's civilian administration was launched, the Japanese governor-general's residence in the Cheong Wa Dae compound was dismantled to remove a major symbol of the Japanese colonial occupation.
To the north of Cheong Wa Dae is the mountain Bugaksan, flanked by two mountains, Naksan, symbolizing the Blue Dragon, on the left and Inwangsan, symbolizing the White Tiger, on the right.

President-elect Roh Moo-hyun's reorganized version of the presidential secretariat at Cheong Wa Dae will play a larger role in foreign and security affairs and its policy teams will display more flexibility in handling the national agenda, officials said on Feb. 10.
The last two positions will be added to the presidential office in order to promote Cheong Wa Dae's communication with the public and to encourage citizen participation in state affairs, Lee said.
Critics say the enhancement of the Cheong Wa Dae secretariat runs counter to calls for reducing the influence of the presidential aides, long criticized for wielding too much power.

[Editorial] Inexcusable Behavior by a Foreign Ministry Official : English Editorials : Internet Hankyoreh
Cheong Wa Dae's civil affairs office received a report that a high-ranking officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, someone working in the area of relations with the United States, made comments so "inappropriate" that they cannot be overlooked, and that there have occasionally been information leaks related to ministry business.
Cheong Wa Dae is therefore in the middle of an inquiry into the matter.
The inquiry appears on the surface to be about the behavior of one foreign ministry official, but some observers are saying that beneath outward appearances lies Cheong Wa Dae's displeasure and distrust of the ministry, particularly regarding its handling of Korean-American issues such as the relocation of the U.S. military installation at Yongsan.

Regarding the Japanese politicians’ mentioning of the possibility of a pre-emptive attack on the North’s missile base, Cheong Wa Dae yesterday mounted a frontal attack on the statement, saying, “Japan’s referring to the attack shows its aggressive proclivity, which we have to be deeply vigilant on,” heightening tensions between the two countries.
Cheong Wa Dae spokesman Chung Tae-ho relayed Cheong Wa Dae statement, “The fact that a series of Japanese politicians are speaking of the likelihood of pre-emptive actions on the Korean peninsula and justifying the use of armed forces is very grave itself” at the meeting under the presidency of Chief of Staff Lee Byung-wan.
Cheong Wa Dae further warned, “We will firmly deal with the arrogance and unreasonable speech by Japanese politicians, which are aimed at further increasing crisis on the Korean peninsula on the ground of North Korea’s missile firing using dangerous and provocative words such as ‘pre-emptive attacks’ and justifying the rationale to expand its military forces.”

The senior presidential secretarial department on public affairs posted a writing on Cheong Wa Dae briefing on July 9 that although somebody is trying to label the North Korea’s missile launching incident an emergency situation for political reasons, which is just a political case, not an emergency situation on the security level.

A message on the official Cheong Wa Dae website highlights the gulf between Seoul and Washington over North Korea¡¯s recent missile launch.
The post says the missiles Pyongyang test-fired last Wednesday were ¡°not designed to target anyone in particular.¡± Since "a possible test of a long-range Taepodong 2 missile was already widely expected, South Korean military authorities issued no crisis warnings, nor did any other countries,¡± it explains.
The message seems framed to stress Cheong Wa Dae¡¯s judgment that the missile test was not a shot across the bow for South Korea, the U.S. and Japan -- as observers concluded from the range of the three types of missiles the North launched -- but rather carried out with a non-military ulterior motive.
