The largest red-light district in Seoul near the Cheongnyangni train station is expected to be closed down next year following the city's urban redevelopment project.
The red-light district, commonly known as the "Cheongnyangni 588," after the number of the city bus that used to pass through the neighborhood, has long been the city's largest center for prostitution, with more than 400 women working in about 150 brothels when business was in full swing.
However, after the government launched a special crackdown on the sex trade with the enforcement of a law against prostitution in September 2004, Cheongnyangni saw the number of brothels drop significantly, as in the case of the city's other red-light districts in Miari, Yongsan and Yeongdeungpo.
