But it was not a quest for the bay’s beauty, but greed for its resources, which brought the first white men to the shores of Chequamegon Bay in August 1659 and determined the course of its subsequent history.
The thesis of this book is that the settlement, development, and decline of the Chequamegon Bay region and its communities were shaped largely by the exploitation of its natural resources by and for the benefit of groups outside the region.
This study examines what happened to the Chequamegon Bay communities during this cycle of prosperity and stagnation, that is, what the consequences were for these communities of their constantly changing economic fortunes from the fur trade era to 1883.

 Part I - In Their Wake
Despite the arrival of the railroad on Chequamegon Bay, ferry boats continued to be in great demand for local transportation, and adjusted their schedules to coordinate with train service.
She worked on the Bay for many years, finally rotting away on the Ashland waterfront, where she was salvaged for materials during World War I. The 66-foot steamer Tourist was launched on the Bay in 1888.
In the 1890's and early 20th century, Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands region experienced tremendous growth in an industry that was destined to provide on-going sustenance for the area: that was tourism.

Smallmouth Bass Fishing on Lake Superior's Chequamegon Bay can start as early as the first week of May. The prespawn and spawning areas are large shallow flats that include deeper wood and weed areas that warm up quickly in the spring and tempt the Bays smallmouths.
One of the newest and hottest lures on the Bay is Mepps #3 silver Aglia Streamer with a white Streamer and stinger hook.
Chequamegon Bay is a fantastic fishery for smallmouths, walleyes and northern pike.

This once was a spit connecting southeastward to Chequamegon Point; it was breached on several occasions in the 19th Century.
Chequamegon Point Light is at the lower right corner of the photo; La Pointe Light, with a pier, is at the extreme left.
The island is apparently growing on the north side while suffering erosion on the side facing the bay.

The primary goal is to rehabilitate the Siskiwit Bay coaster brook trout to ensure its long term sustainability through the presence of six or more age groups (0-5) and a spawning population exhibiting sufficient densities, ensuring a viable gene pool.

 Rare bird has people flocking to Chequamegon Bay (WI)
ASHLAND — Last Thursday a routine waterfowl survey in Chequamegon Bay turned into "among the most exciting" of 30 years of bird observations, Dick Verch said.
As Heckler and Verch focused binoculars in the direction of the bird, they noted a small gull with gray underwings and what appeared to be a pinkish tinge to the underside of the body.
The three talked about what they might be seeing and it became apparent that for the first time in 16 years they weren't going to complete the last four census stations of the survey route.

There is open water yet a ways north of the lighthouse area over towards Washburn, but the shore ice from the head of the bay east to Second Landing has been locked in since it skimmed over.
For the rest of they bay, I hear good reports of ice over off the Ashland side and over near Second Landing, where I am sure there will be a few people out this weekend cruising around on snowmobiles and ATV's...
I'll probally hit the bay towards the end of the week, (thurs or fri) unless I hear of a great report or two.

 Northland College: Restoring Chequamegon Bay
They described changes in fish populations and wetlands around the bay and explained the steps involved in preparing a habitat management plan.
It has 137 rare or endangered species of plants and animals, and provides habitat for a wide range of birds and fish, including the lake sturgeon.
The group concluded that, while studies have been done on individual species and sites around the bay, little is known about nutrient and energy flows through the ecosystem.
