This jaw-droppingly personal song possibly has the title of the most underrated song by Madonna, not because it is criticised but because it is simply invisible when in truth it is the embodiment of truly great songwriting.
Madonna's relationship with her father was difficult and complex, and the revisitation of her childhood in Oh Father goes some way to explain this, explaining how much better she feels now she is no longer under her father's control and anger.

It could be said that each Madonna album takes her for better or for worse to the next level in that case "Like a Prayer" was the death of a Pop Star and the Birth of an Artist.
Despite steering into a gospel sound, the song is still highly sexually charged, highly danceable whilst she is backed by a string of angelic sounding gospel singers that was conducted by Andre Couch which merley heightened its blatant spiritual nature.
This album was a conscious effort by Madonna to appeal to a more mature fanbase and it's obvious it was calculated to be seen as a soul-searching album with her 'most personal lyrics yet', but, amazingly, despite this obvious manipulation, it really does deliver.

Madonna must have read all of our minds, because she creates the haunting piano ballad she was capable of here.
Madonna's vocals are lovely with all their flaws on this song.

When Cherish was released as a single, I heard it so often on the radio that I eventually came to dislike the song; listening to it again now, though, I realize how great the song really is. Cherish strikes me as possessing a certain air and spirit of 1960s pop music.
The music itself is rather subdued, placing the song's emphasis on Madonna's lyrical stylings; this calming track is the kind of song I imagine Madonna would sing to her children at bedtime.

And then I realized that if I had to pick out Madonna's top ten songs, I would be choosing songs that come off of her last few albums, with the big exception of American Life, of which I cannot find any redeeming value.
Besides, this is the one song from the early years that Madonna still sings in concert, so I think it's probably her favorite, or at least it must still be as fun to sing this song for her as it is for me.
Madonna's preoccupation with Catholicism is a bit much to take, but it's still better than Ester's kaballah phase.
