First mentioned in 907, Chernihiv is one of the oldest cities of Kievan Rus.
From the 11th to 13th cent., Chernihiv was the capital of a principality of the same name, but the city declined after the Mongol invasion of 1239.
Chernihiv’s architectural monuments include the 11th-century Spaskyy Cathedral, the Church of the Assumption in the Yelets Monastery (11th cent.), and Ivan Mazeppa’s baroque army building (17th–18th cent.).

The first caves in the north-central Ukrainian city of Chernihiv, the capital of the Chernihivo-Siverske Kingdom, were dug by monks of Rus as early as at the dawn of Christianity in Ukraine, in the 11th century.
In the spring of 1918, some of the residents of Chernihiv knew that a group of people headed by Priest-Monk Alipii were digging a cave near the fence of Trinity-St. Elias Monastery, in a deep overgrown ravine out of sight, for to do so otherwise was dangerous at the time of the Revolution.
In scholarly terms, the Chernihiv caves are man-made underground buildings dug in different periods in the thick layer of the right main bank of the Desna river.

TORONTO - Three teachers from rural centers in the Chernihiv Oblast of Ukraine were awarded certificates along with stipends of $100 at a ceremony held at the Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi Museum in the historic city of Chernihiv in July of this year.

When we visited Kyiv from Chernihiv there was a location near the square in Kyiv where you could find a mini-bus which took you to one of the main underground stations in Kyiv.

Verloo, a native of Belgium who served with the Royal Belgian Air Force before moving to the U.S., was a retired employee of the California Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division with a master's degree in business administration and a bachelor of science degree in engineering.
In Chernihiv he worked with Alahar, a non-governmental organization that advises other NGOs on matters of organizational and financial sustainability and how to encourage community participation and volunteerism.
