There are presently no operating reactors in the county, but it was considered by Duke for a reactor in the 1970's. Cherokee County also approved an incentive package last year that offers a 50 percent property tax break to any company building a new nuclear reactor.
If granted (likely in the 2010 timeframe), such a permit would allow Duke to build new nuclear reactors in Cherokee County - something that hasn't happened anywhere in the U.S. in nearly 30 years. The new reactors could be operational by 2015.
Duke is also pursuing Early Site Permits at its Oconee nuclear plant in South Carolina, and a site in Davie County, North Carolina. Duke is a member of a business consortium called NuStart Energy Development that is pursuing new reactors in Mississippi and Alabama.
