Cherry Jones may not be a household name on the same level as Ellen DeGeneres, but the openly lesbian Tony Award-winning Broadway actress has contributed significantly to gay and lesbian visibility in the U.S. since she first stepped onto the stage in the late 1970s.
Jones also knew from an early age that she wanted to be an actress, and after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania, she joined the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she remained throughout the 1980s.
The play—in which Jones kissed another woman as part of her role, a move that shocked many people in the audience at the time—was a critical flop, and Jones told The Advocate in 1999 that “it was the biggest disaster I ever had in my career.

Fametracker :: Hey! It's That Guy! :: Cherry Jones
Cherry Jones was not among the stage and screen straddlers EW profiled, but she sure could have been.
She was accorded fewer scenes than the average person has fingers on one hand, and had to use them to portray a fanatically religious woman thwarted by her husband and jealous of her daughter; basically, she has nothing more to do than be one of the ghouls of Ashley Judd's bad childhood.
However, her character in the current Signs is a return to form for Jones -- a woman of the heartland, whose demeanour marries the cool reason and logic of a law-enforcement officer with a maternal kindliness and solicitude.
