  Cherusci - LoveToKnow 1911
CHERUSCI, an ancient German tribe occupying the basin of the Weser to the north of the Chatti.
Together with the other tribes of western Germany they submitted to the Romans in 11-9 B.e., but in A.D. Arminius, one of their princes, rose in revolt, and defeated and slew the Roman general Quintilius Varus with his whole army.
By the end of the 1st century the prestige of the Cherusci had declined through unsuccessful warfare with the Chatti.

 Arminius
Arminius (17 BC-19 AD), in Germany sometimes called Hermann der Cherusker, was a war chief of the Germanic tribe of the Cherusci.
Arminius (a Latinized variant of a German name, which is unknown, but was for sure not "Hermann") was the son of a Cherusci war chief named Segimer.
As a young man, he served as an auxiliary in the Roman army[?], probably fighting other barbarian tribes in the Balkan peninsula.

 The Cherusci
Probably the most famous and certainly the most dangerous of the western tribes, the Cherusci are best known for their defeat of Varus and their war of resistance against Germanicus afterwards.
The Cherusci were subdued in the campaigns of Drusus, but rose in rebellion only to be crushed again.
The fall of the Cherusci involved also the neighbouring tribe of the Fosi, who played second fiddle to them in prosperity but get an equal share of their adversity.

 Tacitus: Annals: Book 2 [40]
Thus it was not only the Cherusci and their allies, the old soldiers of Arminius, who took up arms, but even the Semnones and Langobardi from the kingdom of Maroboduus revolted to that chief.
Arminius in his infatuation and ignorance was taking to himself the glory which belonged to another, for he had treacherously surprised three unofficered legions and a general who had not an idea of perfidy, to the great hurt of Germany and to his own disgrace, since his wife and his son were still enduring slavery.
The Cherusci and Langobardi were fighting for ancient renown or newly-won freedom; the other side for the increase of their dominion.

 Detail Page
The Cherusci, both the tribe and the loose confederation of which it was the head, dominated the region between the Weser and Elbe rivers, to the north of the Chatti, their hated enemy.
Further, in 15, the Cherusci had been divided into two camps: those of Arminius and his father in law, Segestes, who joined the Romans.
As pawns of the Empire the Cherusci played the part of allies, used continually to sap Chatti strength at their own expense.

In 9 BCE an altar to Roma et Augustus, the cult of the Emperor, was established at the tribal capital of the Ubii (later Cologne), and he attacked the Marcomanni, advanced through the territory of the Cherusci, and reached the Elbe.
Tiberius said, "...the Cherusci and other rebellious tribes, now that we have duly punished them, can be left to their own internal disturbances." Indeed, very shortly Arminius and Maroboduus were at one another.
Whatever the case, Germanicus was recalled by Tiberius, who said that "...the Cherusci and other rebellious tribes, now that we have duly punished them, can be left to their own internal disturbances." Indeed, this proved prophetic; very little time passed before Arminius and Maroboduus were at one another.

Roman Army Talk :: View topic - Cherusci History?
There is a question mark about the Cherusci, Hermanduri and Chatti and the likes of Hachmann, Kossack and Kuhn propose that they were not germanic speaking at all.
The dominance of the Cherusci over western and south-western Germania didn’t decline until after Arminius’ assassination in 21 AD and they didn’t decline as a power in the area until 80 years later.
This sounds pretty speculative, since the only evidence we have of the language of the Cherusci is the names of their chieftains and they are all definitely Germanic in form.

What Varus was up against were a people which had a long history of independence and they saw no reason to sacrifice their freedom or wealth on Rome's altar.
More importantly the German Cherusci tribes which inhabited the northern Rhine valley along the plains and forests of northwestern Germany (between modern Osnabrück and Hanover) had a long history and well developed system of trade.

He went to great lengths to flatter the corrupt Roman legate and convince him that he and his tribe, the Cherusci, were friends and allies of Rome.
He convinced Varus that the "loyal" Cherusci and, no doubt, the economic potential of the region, were being threatened by anti-Roman tribes in the area and in need of military protection.
Lulled into complacency by the alleged friendship of the Cherusci, whose territory Varus's legionnaires would have to traverse to reach the rebels, the Romans set out on an administrative march.

Erminameraz now returns to the Cherusci as a Roman commander holding the rank of Knight, but this time he finds all is not well in the lands of the Cherusci.
As they enter Cherusci territory Varus is met by Seugastiz who warns him not to trust Erminameraz and cautions that some kind of rebellion seems to be brewing.

"in pace recepti"?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In this view, Arminius was a noble young Aryan hero, who roused and united the tribes against the Roman aggressors and, through splendid racial purity and proto-National Socialist ardour, defeated the invaders and cleansed the Fatherland.
To reject the Nazi/nationalist myths of brave Aryan heroes is one thing, but to pretend the whole uprising was simply a mutiny (and that the Romans were defenceless peaceniks on a nature walk who were mugged by muderous traitorous auxiliaries) is going rather too far in the other direction.
She bases this on the fact that, after an uprising of the Cherusci against the governor Marcus Vinicius in 1-4 AD the Cherusci are reported to be a subjected people "in pace recepti".

 Germanic History
Up to the last century, it was a widely held belief that German history began in the year A.D. That was when Arminius, a prince of a Germanic tribe called the Cherusci, vanquished three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest (southeast of modern-day Bielefeld).
Arminius, about whom not much else is known, was regarded as the first German national hero, and a huge memorial to him was built near Detmold in the years 1838-75.
When the Romans in turn attempted to conquer the area east of the Rhine River early in the 1st century, they were defeated by the Cherusci chief Arminius (Hermann).

By the time Tacitus wrote the Germania in AD98, he described the Cherusci thus: “[T]he Cherusci have been left free from attack to enjoy a prolonged peace, too secure and enervating - a pleasant but perilous indulgence among powerful aggressors, where there can be not true peace.

His Cherusci held the center of the line on high ground.
To face them, Germanicus formed his army into three lines, with auxiliaries to the front supported by skirmishers, a second line of legionaries centered on his Praetorians, who were flanked by two legions on each side, and a reserve line of legionary, auxiliary and allied detachments.
With both wings collapsed and milling in their rear, the Cherusci in the center gave way, and a general rout ensued followed by a Roman pursuit in which Arminius escaped by covering his face in blood to avoid recognition.

As Varus took his leave, the Cherusci asked to rejoin their tribes - ostensibly to recruit men to help put down the revolt that they had invented.

When Arminius saw the Romans advance out of the trenches he formed his men into a massive arch with one wing on the river and the other on heavy forests, the Cherusci held the center line, because Arminius was one of them.
The Cherusci were so fierce that they almost broke the center of the Roman first line, but the auxiliaries despite it all still held on.
With both the German left and right broken and taking a beating at the hands of the Roman cavalry the Cherusci too broke down and fled, this caused a general route in which the Germans were massacred as they attempted to either cross the Weser or flee into the forest.
