Construction of the Canal began in on July 4, 1828, the same day the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was begun.
Parts of the Canal have been rewatered and other towns along its path are hoping to do the same in the future, but in the meantime, much of the bed of the Canal is filled with trees and shrubs.

Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, former waterway, c.185 mi/298 km long, from Wash., D.C., to Cumberland, Md., running along the N bank of the Potomac R. A successor to the Potomac Company’s (1784–1828) navigation improvement project, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was planned to extend W to Pittsburgh.
Although extension to Pittsburgh proved impractical, the canal experienced a busy period in the 1870s carrying coal from the Cumberland mines.
The canal was used until it was damaged by floods in 1924.

The principal difference between life on the old and on the new canals, so far as the children are concerned, lies in the fact that on the older canals child labor is profitable and practically indispensable while on the newer canals there is little place for it.
On the new canals, to be sure, boats are being constructed with larger cabins and better sanitary arrangements, but under both systems there are the same conditions in regard to irregular school attendance, improper medical care, inadequate recreation, and exhausting hours of labor for those children who work.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal extends from Washington, DC, to Cumberland, Md., along the eastern bank of the Potomac River, a distance of 185 miles, with an ascent of 609 feet which is overcome by means of 75 locks.
The canal varies in width at the surface from 55 to 65 feet and at the bottom from 30 to 42 feet and has a depth of 6 feet throughout.
During the winter months it is customary to drain the canal to prevent damage which might be caused by freezing.

The canal operated from 1850 to 1924, then sat neglected until the 1950s, when plans for a highway along its route spurred a successful movement to preserve the historic canal and its accompanying towpath.
Today the canal and towpath are popular with hikers, bikers, and joggers as well as paddlers.
Although most of the canal no longer holds water, the last 20 miles or so are intact, and the preserved towpath provides frequent river-access points and campsites along its entire route.

On a previous trip to this region, we had discovered the Chesapeake and Ohio (CandO) Canal Trail across from Harpers Ferry, where it briefly joins the Appalachian Trail.
The CandO Canal ran along the Potomac River from Washington, DC to Cumberland, MD. Today the entire length of the canal is protected by the National Park Service.
(Unlike the NCR trail, the slow grade of the canal is virtually unnoticeable, except at the locks, where the level naturally changes stepwise.) The scenery was beautiful.
