A son of Alexander Chesney, Francis Rawdon Chesney (1789-1872), was a British Army general and a well-known explorer of the Euphrates and founder of the overland route to India.
Chesney attended a large meeting of the Association of American Loyalists in London at the Crown and Anchor tavern in the Strand, where it was determined to petition the king's ministers, Mr.
Chesney was greatly surprised at receiving a letter from his eldest son, William, of whose survival he was not even aware, stating that he was living in the State of Tennessee, but was not in flourishing circumstances.

Chesney, with his 'talking harmonica' novelty act, had been performing on the show since its inception when, in 1955, comedian Wolfe joined the series as a scriptwriter.

Wolfe and Chesney themselves were credited with the screenplay of Fredrikssons Fabrikk (1994), the feature film spin-off of Norway's own television version of the garment factory comedy.

Giving the female members of the cast all the funny lines was unprecedented, but the enormous ratings proved how successful the writers Wolfe and Chesney were in their enterprise.
Peter Jones's role, typically, was as straightman to the women, and Reg Varney (later to star in Wolfe and Chesney's On The Buses) fared little better as his foreman, stuck in the dichotomous position of having a foot in both camps, management and workforce.
Undeterred, around the same period, Wolfe and Chesney sensed the time might be right for a British revival of their creation and took the idea back to the BBC.

Within six months of its launch, LWT was the grateful recipient of a new sitcom from the writing Two Ronnies, Wolfe and Chesney.
Wolfe and Chesney had also relinquished their role as exclusive writers by this time: as well as acting in the series, Bob Grant (Jack) and Stephen Lewis (Blakey) began contributing scripts, as did Jonathan Lynn and George Layton.
When it all finally finished Blakey's character was spun-off into a new Wolfe and Chesney sitcom, Don't Drink The Water while plain Olive's character, once again played by (the actually far from plain) Anna Karen, resurfaced in the writers' 1977-78 LWT revival of The Rag Trade.
