Chess (musical) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chess is a musical with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, formerly of ABBA.
Chess developed something of a cult following based primarily on the score as heard on the concept album, but even cuts for time and good word of mouth was not enough to keep it from closing on 25 June after it won no Tony Awards.
Chess was, even in 1990, trying to keep itself modern; the ending of the Cold War was noted in all versions of the show.

Chess is sometimes seen as an abstract wargame; as a "mental martial art", and teaching chess has been advocated as a way to increase mental prowess.

In 1972 a new era began in the chess world when the Russian world champion of the time, Boris Spassky, was challenged by an American CHESS genius, Bobby Fischer, in Iceland.
Fischer was an obnoxious, self-centered primadonna who voiced his opinions readily, complaining about everything from the colour of the squares on the board to the noise of childrens' sweet wrappers.
The story was not about the game of CHESS itself but rather to mirror it in such a way that the actual players become pawns in a political game.

John Greschak - Connections between Music and Chess
Chess is a musical written by Benny Andersson (music), Björn Ulvaeus (music), and Tim Rice (lyrics).
The recorded music (of duration 7:48) was performed on piano by Margaret Leng Tan, who transcribed the score that is embedded in the painting.
For example, in chess, a person who creates puzzles and problems to be solved is called a composer, and two different sequences of moves that lead from one given position to another are said to be related by transposition.

Indeed, music has played such a big role in my life that at times it is hard even for me to say whether chess or music holds a greater fascination.
The musical, which ran at London's Barbican Centre and later on Broadway, was based very loosely on the 1972 world championship match in Iceland between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.
While CHESS was about a chess story set to music and E2-E4 was music with various chess themes, I have my doubts whether their authors or song writers--Rice, Andersson, Ulvaeus or Gottsching--had ever played competitive chess in their lives.

Chess is a wonderfully pop musical, with a unique 1980s tone that sets it up as a cold war love story.
The music is lush, diverse, by turns dramatic and delicate, searing and fragile, yet always possessed by one of the most acute melodic sensibilities ever to compose for the theatre: Benny Andersson.
Perhaps the fact that "Chess" had been his obsession for many years (he had proposed the project to Lloyd Webber in the last '70s, but the composer was more interested in "Cats") contributed to Rice's performance here.
