Chess is an exercise of infinite possibilities for the mind, one which develops mental abilities used throughout life: concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving, pattern recognition, strategic planning, creativity, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, to name a few.
Chess clearly is a problem-solving tool, an “ideal way to study decision-making and problem-solving because it is a closed system with clearly defined rules” (Horgan, 1988).
Chess makes a child realize that he or she is responsible for his or her own actions and must accept their consequences.

To "do a Benko" in Arizona chess slang (I forgot it is not a national term) means to stand aside for someone more worthy, as Benko did for Fischer in 1970.

I naturally assumed that Jason Rebello was a promising young chess player, perhaps a junior champion, that I had never heard of before, or perhaps he was an extremely wealthy person who had decided to donate a few million dollars to chess.
I was astounded when glancing through the December Chess Life to stop at the full page devoted to Jason Rebello and discover that he is not a chess master or a promising junior player at all.
Thinking that there must be more of a reason why his picture should be on the cover of Chess Life and a lengthy interview of him inside the pages of the magazine, I decided to read the interview, which is on page 55.

I guess that's part of life, the unpredictable events that I can't possibly foresee.
However, life is such an impossible worthy opponent.
True, life is infinitely more complicated than chess, but that means you have infinitely more moves and positions than chess and you can make them simultaneously in some cases...especially if you get a 2 fer 1 deal at the Red Light district.

Probably the best of the "personal homepage" style chess sites on the web, this one has actual content; tidbits, opinions, essays, problems, etc. Especially useful for those new to online chess, Ed has a section comparing the various chess servers, and a page devoted to the WinBoard interface.
I wrote this letter in rebuttal to a few other letters that were published a couple of months prior to that.
Although this chess program will interest almost none of you, I'm putting a copy of it up here anyway because hey, this is MY homepage.
