Chess Records was an American record label, based in Chicago, Illinois.
Run by brothers Leonard Chess and Phil Chess, it was an important record label in rock and roll history, as it released many singles and albums now regarded as part of the rock music 'canon', by its blues and rock and roll artists.
Chess Records recorded and released blues music, rock and roll, rhythm and blues, jazz, and soul.

When he recorded "Gypsy Woman" and "Little Anna Mae" for Aristocrat the Chess brothers found in him the means to distinguish their little company from the hundreds of other independent RandB labels springing up across the country.
By 1949 Aristocratic Records which became Chess Records in 1950, was a fixture in the world of music and its recordings and the songs published by Arc Music remain the most impressive collection of blues music in the world.
In the beginning Chess Records was ran as a two man business, with Phil overseeing the nightclub and the offices of Aristocrat/Chess and Arc, while Leonard alternately scouted talent, produced the sessions, and hand delivered fresh recordings to radio stations in the Chicago area.

One of the earlier female artists to record material which questioned traditional male dominance and asserted the need for female independence, she later became an arch exponent of this genre, along with artists such as Millie Jackson and Betty Wright.
The Chess reputation also attracted the 'new breed' of blues artists, including Otis Rush and Buddy Guy - it also got a new lease of life in the 60s when the so called blues boom generated renewed interest in both the recordings and the artists who made them.
Surprisingly to many, Chess didn't just concentrate on the blues idiom (see other column) but they never attracted the same kudos or commercial success as the likes of Atlantic and Stax, although artistically at least, much of the label's R'n'B output was equal to that of any recorded elsewhere.

I'm open to new records and suggestions for new categories, but only "serious and verifiable tournament games", although that is an elastic concept, will be considered.
A special record was set by GM Cheparinov who played games of 155 and 150 moves vs. Stefanova and Onischuk in consecutive rounds in the Corus (B) Tournament of 2005.
In the records I had here before, I also counted non-captures where the pawn was pinned, or the non-capturing side was in check.

Recordings such as "Johnny B. Goode," "Rescue Me," and "Red Rooster" were all recorded at Chess, and in the 1960s, the Rolling Stones immortalized the address in the Blues instrumental "2120 S. Michigan Avenue," much of which was recorded there.
Chess was a very significant record label that made a huge impression on European groups, including the Rolling Stones, who took their name from the widely popular Muddy Waters tune, "Rollin’ Stone."
However, further restoration of the recording facilities is still needed to fully re-capture the heart and look of its 1950’s and 60’s heyday.

In this survey of chess records, I have limited myself to the practical game itself: no longest winning streaks or youngest champions; no selfmates in 418.
Evidently, 'this is the record' means: 'this is the record known to me, as of the latest update.' Some of these records, like 'Longest Game' and 'Most Queens on the Board', have been the subject of publications for a century; others are just meant as an opening bid.
This record is still in the hands of a Queen from the times of Queen Victoria, with 73 consecutive moves.

I was raised during the heyday of the independent record business and was lucky enough to know and work with many of the great Chess artists, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry and many others.
I was going to call the project 2120 (the landmark Chess Studio address, 2120 South Michigan) in honor of all the great music that came out of the Chess Studios and all the fl music that surrounded me as I was growing up.
For many years I have been thinking that the old way of recording without extensive over-dubbing was a key ingredient in getting the magic and feeling back in the music.

They may have been Polish but this is no joke, the Chess brothers knew the Blues and within a couple years had a stable of extraordinarily talented Black artists to be the envy of the industry.
While Chess was locking up many of the best R&B artists in the midwest, Atlantic and it's subsidiary Atco were becoming the Big Dogs of the East Coast R&B scene.
Of course, Atlantic records is still churning out good music of all genres and has become a major player in the record industry and could now be considered a major label.
