Electronic T-Notes March 10, 2002 (Optimizing a chess engine's strength)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Even though chess programmers have made great strides in making their engines inherently stronger over the last few years, the single most important factor in a chess engine's strength is still the computer's processor.
If a chess engine plays an opening that generally leads to closed positions, it's not going to be able to utilize the very things that computers excel at: tactical accumen and great use of piece mobility.
An engine's programmer is very familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of his own creation; each engine's opening book is designed to lead to positions that allow that particular engine to maximize its unique strengths while minimizing its deficiencies.

Chess Engine Communication Protocol   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Engines that do not support a particular new feature do not have to use it; new features are not enabled unless the engine specifically requests them using the feature command.
First, when your engine tries to write some characters to xboard, the library stashes them in an internal buffer and does not actually write them to the pipe connected to xboard until either the buffer fills up or you call a special library routine asking for it to be flushed.
Associate the engine's clock with the color that is on move, the opponent's clock with the color that is not on move.
