What chess books lack in literature distinction they make up for in numbers – unfortunately for us though too many of them seem to be written by the likes of Ray Keene and Eric Schiller.
This impressive library took shape in 1948 when Niemeijer (1902-87), a problem composer, author, International Master for Chess Composition, lawyer and banker, gave his collection of over 7,000 books to the Royal Dutch Library on the proviso that it would be merged with van der Linde’s haul of 846 housed there since 1876.
This was the main reason for donating his books to the Library: to enable a wider appreciation of it by opening it up to the general public.
