Chesapeake and Ohio Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1980, the Chessie system combined with Seaboard Coast Line Industries to form CSX Corporation, which by 1987 had merged all its railroad subsidiaries into CSX Transportation, one of seven Class I railroads operating in North America at the beginning of the 21st century.
From 1900 to 1920 most of the CandO's lines tapping the rich bituminous coal fields of southern West Virginia and eastern Kentucky were built, and the CandO as it was known throughout the rest of the 20th Century was essentially in place.
Under Watkins' careful and visionary leadership, Chessie System then merged with Seaboard System Railroad (itself a combination of great railroads of the Southeast including Seaboard Air Line, Atlantic Coast Line, Louisville and Nashville Railroad, Clinchfield Railroad and others), to form a new mega-railroad: CSX Transportation (CSX).

Chessie is probably the most endearing and certainly one of the most successful corporate symbols in American history.
Chessie's first appearance on behalf of C&O was in September, 1933 issue of Fortune magazine, in an ad that carried "Sleep Like a Kitten" as its slogan.
Today, Chessie no longer appears in timetables or on locomotives and rail cars, but she nevertheless is alive in the hearts of millions who grew up during her life's work on the C&O and successor lines.

At the peak of its property holdings, the Chessie System roads directly served the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Missouri, the District of Columbia, and the Canadian province of Ontario.
The Chessie System era coincided with the last fifteen years of regular caboose service on the nation’s mainlines, and the de facto standard on the C&O during this time was International Car Company’s “Extended-Vision” design, delivered in two batches between 1968 and 1970.
