Thompson started playing the piano at his home in Oklahoma City at age five, picking out the notes from popular songs he heard on the radio.
By the age of 13, Thompson had discovered jazz, which became a major, life-long influence, and by the age of 16, he had switched almost exclusively to the Hammond organ, and was playing in high school rock bands.
Chester joined the Santana band in 1983 and starting with his debut on "Beyond Appearances", Thompson has injected the band's music with a powerful, creative energy that has added new dimension to their sound.

Thompson went to jam with the band and was eventually offered the drummer’s seat with the legendary group.
Apparently, this situation was not communicated to Walden, and while Thompson was not threatened by the inclusion of an additional drummer in the recording sessions, there was obviously some discomfort with the situation for some parties.
This was a role that Chester Thompson was more than capable of fulfilling, having played with Frank Zappa as part of a dual drummer set-up and having the experience of playing everything from jazz, soul, and funk, to straight-ahead pop music.

Chester Thompson, born in Baltimore,Maryland, made his name as a session drummer, going on to play in Frank Zappa 's touring band and with Weather Report.
His longest standing gig was with Genesis from 1977, playing on their tours in that year, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983/4, 1986/7 and 1992/3and is featured on their live albums Seconds Out, Three Sides Live and The Way We Walk Volumes 1 and 2.
Thompson continues to work with Phil Collins on his solo concert tours and has released his own solo album, A Joyful Noise.

On the first reference of his name in the liner notes he is Chester Kingsbury.
The other album says Chester Thompson and in the same place in the liner notes the proper noun Thompson is placed slightly crooked right after Chester.
