Chester Zoo is the largest Zoo in the UK housing over 5,000 animals and hiring as many as 500 zoo staff at peak time.

At Chester Crown Court today (29th November) Chester Zoo was fined £25,000 and ordered to pay costs of £50,000 after admitting breaching health and safety laws in the zoo's elephant house leading up to the death of a keeper in 2001.
The prosecution had claimed that there was an "unreasonable risk of injury" generated by the zoo because there were no written protocols on the handling and training of elephants.
Chester Zoo later euthanised Kumara because of illness.

Chester itself is a lovely city which can easily be explored on foot, in fact driving in Chester (or more to the point, parking) can be a bit of a problem at times.
It’s best to avoid Chester during the “Races” if you can as you won’t really see the true nature of the place as it’s far too busy to be able to relax and enjoy ther city at a slower, more natural place.
Chester was my home during my college years and for a few years after – and it’s still very special to me. There’s something very unique about it and it’s definitely worth more than one visit.

It is also a good idea to take a picnic, especially if you have young children due to the fact that the choice of food has decreased over the years and it is cheaper and more pleasent to sit outside.
The zoo is actually an expensive day out but at least you are helping conservation and it is educational.
