In the Middle Ages it became Cestrie in Strata 1372 and then Chester in the Strett 1523.

Chester-le-Street and District Angling Club was formed in 1935 with very little water, but we now have around 10 miles of double bank fishing.
Club Headquarters are at The Relton Workmens Club and Institute Ltd, Ropery Lane, Chester-Le-Street, Co Durham.
