Strictly, to mean any of the species in the genera Accipiter, Micronisus, Melierax, Urotriorchis, and Megatriorchis.
The widespread Accipiter genus includes goshawks, sparrowhawks, the Sharp-shinned hawk and others.
They are mainly woodland birds that hunt by sudden dashes from a concealed perch.

Louette [8] concluded from a detailed study of specimens that size and plumage morphology follow a west-east cline in West Africa (the presence of the smallest birds in the West being the reason for unsubstantiated claims that Chestnut-flanked Sparrowhawk occurs there).
This may be the result of adaptation to a relatively closed environment in which the needs for sexual attraction overrule the benefit of crypsis in the female [7].
The monotypic Chestnut-flanked Sparrowhawk, on the other hand, is only present in the Lower Guinea forest region.

 Tropical Birding Cameroon tour report, April 2003
We were pleasantly surprised with our rooms, the view over the lake and gallery forest and the thought we could unpack and make this our home for the next three days.
The remainder was rain affected, but we were able to bird along trails and forest paths, sheltering from showers under thick tangles and venturing to the forest edge when it stopped.
Howie and Karyn reached Rengo Rock and on their way scored a White-crested Hornbill and a White-spotted Flufftail foraging in a boggy area.
