		As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 546.
		In the township the population is spread out with 28.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who are 65 years of age or older.

		Star Township decided to go it alone for fire protection in April, after the Alba fire board hired a new chief for the department, fired its previous attorney and hired Harbor Springs attorney Lester Turner at $225 an hour.
		A summary disposition hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9 in Antrim County Circuit Court, at which Star Township will ask a judge to rule that the 1999 agreement under which the two townships were operating a fire department is invalid.

		Dexter became the owner of extensive landed and timber interests in northern Michigan, and in association with Henry Horbart Noble established large sawmills and conducted extensive lumbering enterprises in Antrim and adjacent counties, while the firm also established a large general store in Elk Rapids, of which town they were numbered among the founders.

		Fewins said that because under Michigan law the maximum sentence the man could receive would be 90 days in jail, federal prosecutors have been contacted to explore felony charges.
		The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall Division, said Dave Duffield, the Otsego County fire chief.
