Annamalai Chettiar was born at Kanadukathan, in the district of Ramnad, on the 30th of September 1881.
Annamalai Chettiar's natural bent was for finance, and his appraisement of the forces which influence the turns and twists of the world of finance was sound and sure.
The Rajah's second son, Sri R. Ramanathan Chettiar, was Sheriff of Madras in 1950, its Mayor in 1950-51, a member of Parliament for several terms and a Director of the Reserve Bank of India.

However there were also Chettiar who operated as small moneylenders, who "by their usury, drive poor families to ruin".
But strict code of honour was practised and a Chettiar explained to a member of the Straits Legislative Council in 1929 that "ostracism or excommunication from our society befalls anyone caught transgressing that code." But neither the Chettiar himself nor his commercial system was static.
The Chettiar also started to seek representation in official bodies after they began to form the Chettiar Chamber of Commerce in the bigger Malayan Towns; the first was founded in Singapore in 1931.

Dr. Grant testified in his deposition that Chettiar suffers from a Charcot deformity in his left foot, which is a condition where the bony and joint structure is destroyed because neural damage causes the patient to be unaware of injury to the area.

Some of these respectable traders could have been members of the Nattukottai Chettiar community as word had gone to Penang and India that there were business opportunities in Raffles' trading post Singapore, and that there was a need for merchants and money-lenders to provide the much needed finance for the newly established shop-keepers and businessmen.
The kittangis at Market Street, where the Nattukottai Chettiars had concentrated their trading and money lending business, were acquired for urban renewal in the 1970s and almost immediately the Chettiars found themselves displaced.
Because the Nattukottai Chettiars hailed from the Pandia district of Tamil Nadu,they refer to Lord Sivan as Chockalinga and Shakti as Meenakshi.
