Cheung Chau, a popular destination for Hong Kongers and our favorite of all the islands, is accessible both via "Fast Ferry" for HK$32 (US$1 is approximately HK$8) or Ordinary Ferry which offers second class seats for HK$16 and first class for HK$26.
Cheung Chau is a charming old fishing community where motor vehicles are prohibited.
The United Nations has now declared the Pearl River estuary, where both Macau and HK are located, a "dead zone." So, perhaps Cheung Chau residents have taken this gloomy news to heart and are looking for other means of income with tourism as an obvious and likely vehicle.

The annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival, which takes place from April 27 to May 4 this year, is one of Hong Kong's most fascinating and colorful celebrations.
It stems from a bid by Cheung Chau islanders to placate the hungry ghosts that roam their peaceful island at this particular time of year.
It was once the custom for the young men of Cheung Chau to scramble up the towers at the stroke of midnight on the last day of the festival (once the ghosts had partaken of the spiritual essence of the food) and distribute the lucky buns to the eagerly awaiting crowd.

Most famous for the Cheung Chau Bun Festival in May every year it is also the oldest continuously inhabited island in Hong Kong, even longer than Hong Kong Island.
Hence many old families of Hong Kong can trace their ancestry to Cheung Chau residents, which explains why on the grave sweeping festivals of Ching Ming and Chung Yeung a lot of people visit Cheung Chau to sweep the graves of their ancestors.

From the harbor of Sai Wan it's just a few steps to the former hideout of the notorious pirate Cheung Po Tsai.
Although he has long since been driven away, his beautiful views remain, as shown in these last three photos.
Personally, I think that with views like this from his hideout, Pirate Cheung was living the life of luxury!
