Cathedral architecture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This semicircular processional aisle with chevet chapels was the favourite plan in the Anglo-Norman cathedrals, and was followed until about the middle of the 12th century, when the English builders in some cases returned to the square east end instead of semicircular apsidal termination.
The earliest example of the chevet is probably to be found in the church of St Martin at Tours; this was followed by others at Tournus, Clermont-Ferrand, Auxerre, Chartres, Le Mans and other churches built during the great church-building period of the 11th century.
Another departure from the usual plan is that found in Albi cathedral (1350), in which there are no aisles, their place being taken by chapels between the buttresses which were required to resist the thrust of the nave vault, the widest in France.

introduced the chevet into England; Henry VII.s chapel is built on the site of the original Lady chapel, which must have been of exceptional size, as it extended the whole length of the present structure.
In the 14th and 15th centuries the centralapse was increased in size and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as in St Ouen at Rouen.

Beginning with the upper stories of the chevet that also date from the early 1170s, the direction of the construction passed to a second builder.
The problem of the darkness of the central space must allready have been apparent when the choir was finished, because in the subsequent construction of the nave the second builder raised the height of the gallery vaults and enlarged the gallery windows.
The basic idea, bracing the wall with quadrant arches to contain the outward thrust of the stone vaults and timber roof, had precedents in the chevet where the quadrant arches hidden by the gallery roof were intended to support the high window wall.

The Church of Saint-Michel de Vaudreuil
The polygonal chevet is an architectural form which was developed by the builders of gothic churches in the 12th and 13th centuries.
It was soon replaced by semicircular and flat chevets although it came back into use in structures built at the end of the French regime such as Saint-François-de-Sales de Neuville or the Church of Saint-Augustin de Desmaures (no longer in existence) near Québec.
The structure of this type of chevet allows for an interior which is rather distinct from those developed at that time for semicircular or flat chevets.

Apse - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the beginning of the 13th century in France, the apses were built as radiating chapels outside the choir aisle, henceforth known as the chevet (French, "headpiece"), when the resulting structure was too complicated to be merely an "apse." Famous northern French examples of chevets are in the Gothic cathedrals of Amiens, Beauvais and Reims.
Such radiating chapels are found in England in Norwich and Canterbury cathedrals, but the fully-developed feature is essentially French, though the Francophil connoisseur Henry III introduced it into Westminster Abbey.
The word `ambulatory` refers to a curving aisle in the apse that passes behind the choir, giving access to chapels in the chevet.
