Cheviot is a town located in the Hurunui District of north Canterbury, on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
Cheviot is named for the nearby Cheviot Hills, themselves named after the Cheviot Hills between England and Scotland.
At the time of the 2001 New Zealand census of population and dwellings, the population of Cheviot was 323, a decrease of 48 over the previous five years.

Cheviot sheep are a very old breed that originated in the Cheviot Hills on the border between England and Scotland.
The British Cheviot Sheep Society was formed in February 1891 but Cheviots had reached New Zealand almost fifty years earlier in 1845 – one of the first British breeds to arrive in this country.
Today the Cheviot is very much a minority breed in New Zealand mostly farmed as flock sheep to produce rams, for use as terminal sires or to breed cross-bred ewes.

 Fording Coal to push ahead with Cheviot mine plan
Just as the Aotearoa/New Zealand government announces it's permitting a coal mine in one of the country's National Parks (see Coal Mine Approved for New Zealand National Park), Fording Coal Trust announces it's proceeding with an even bigger mine, near another National Park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
The pit, near Hinton, Alberta, west of the capital Edmonton, is expected to initially produce 1.4 million tonnes of coal a year, but that could grow to 2.8 million tonnes in 2005 if there is enough demand.
Environmental groups have strongly opposed the Cheviot project and argue the mine, near Jasper National Park in the Rocky Mountains, is a threat to wildlife.

We have a horse from New Zealand at Windchase named Kia Kaha, and although we knew it was a Maori name, we didn’t have a clue what it meant, nor did anybody else we had asked.
When we reached the town of Cheviot we took a scenic little side trip to Gore Bay, where we had a wonderful view of Cathedral Cliffs, a deep canyon with limestone cliffs eroded into an impressive display of fluted columns and pinnacles.
