Chevrolet Corvair - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Corvair was offered in a wide range of body styles (such as a four-door sedan, coupe, convertible, station wagon, pickup, panel van, a window van called the Greenbrier) and featured an air-cooled engine, which was unusual for American cars at the time.
Chevrolet, aware of Nader's criticism, changed the steering shaft to a two-part design with a frangible joint in the 1966 model year, and a collapsible steering column was provided in 1967, towards the end of the model's life span.
All were equipped by the Chevrolet factory with heavy duty suspension, four speed transmission, quicker steering ratio, positraction differentials (50 with 3.89 gears, and 50 with 3.55 when Chevrolet dropped the 3.89) and dual brake master cylinders (the first application of this by Chevrolet, to become stock equipment the next year).

Chevrolet Corvair engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Chevrolet Corvair engine was a flat-6 piston engine used exclusively in the 1960s Chevrolet Corvair automobile.
This increase in stroke was the maximum the engine could tolerate, to the point that the bottoms of the cylinder barrels had to be notched to clear the big end of the connecting rods, while the bottom piston rings at the lowest point of the piston travel actually passed over these notches.
Many Corvair engine fans acquired a second life after the demise of their engines, mounted bottom side out on the outside of the wheels of Corvettes involved in road-racing, in order to pull air through the brakes and keep them cool.

 Chevrolet Corvair
The entire line, which eventually grew to incorporate sedans, coupes, convertibles, vanss, pickupss and station wagons, was initially based on an aluminum, air-cooled 140 cubic inch flat-6 engine mounted in the rear of the vehicle in the style of the Volkswagen Beetle and the Porsche 356 Speedster.
In 1962, Chevrolet began to phase out the austere 500 series and introduced the 150 horsepower turbocharged Spyder for the 1963 model year, making the Corvair the first production automobile to come with a turbocharger as a factory option.
The lineup remained relatively unchanged for the 1964 model year, with the exception of the engine growing from its initial 140 cubic inches to 164, the base horsepower growing from 80 to 95, and the Monza engine growing from 95 horsepower to 110.

 CanadianDriver: Chevrolet Corvair
Chevrolet's Cole was convinced that he could build a bigger and better VW.
Thus, although the Corvair had the same general layout as the VW, the Corvair's 2743 mm (108 in.) wheelbase was 342 mm (13.5 in.) longer, and at 1111 kg (2450 lb), it weighed 363 kg (800 lb) more.
Chevrolet knew it was on to something, and set out to really exploit the sporty car segment.

The Corvair project was initiated in 1956 and was lead by Chevy's chief engineer Edward N. Cole.
Early Corvairs did oversteer, but if recommended tire pressures were maintained, the oversteer problem was minimized.
Chevy redesigned the Corvair in 1965 to be a more sleeker design to better position itself in the market niche it created.

Corvair FCs are popular with many Corvair enthusiasts, and there is a special interest chapter within the Corvair Society of America devoted to them: the Corvanatics.
Chevrolet did some market research and determined that those who bought the VW products did so because they had more interior volume than a pickup based sedan delivery, were smaller outside, were more economical and easier to handle in city traffic.
The Forward Control Corvairs were produced in year models just as the cars were, but most of the variation is in the drivetrain and in the badgework on the front doors.

Corvair - A Great Car At Any Speed   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
This suggestion is based on the fact that Corvair was conceived and marketed as an economy car, and that the rear suspension that was used could have been seen as being quite adequate for a conservative, "reasonable" driving style.
For a moderately skilled driver the Corvair is a genuine ball to drive, it being possible to hustle hard into tight corners and bring the tail around with just a twitch of the wheel, counter-steering until the slide stops and the time for acceleration arrives.
This would not have been an unsurmountable problem had Chevrolet believed in the Corvair, but the fact was that several Chevrolet executives of the time did not like or understand the Corvair, and as a result Chevrolet's solution to the PR problem was to kill the line...

CanadianDriver: Motoring Memories - Chevrolet Corvair pickups, 1961-1964
When General Motors introduced its Chevrolet Corvair compact car for 1960 to counter the rising foreign car invasion, it was clear that it had followed the general layout of the top selling import, the Volkswagen Beetle.
Since the Corvair so slavishly copied the VW car's configuration, it was not surprising that when Chevrolet decided to enter the light commercial vehicle market that VW had virtually to itself, it would base them on the car's components.
Where the Corvair pickup deviated from the VW was in the cargo-carrying configuration.

Every Corvair boasts forged-steel connecting rods and crank, and a gear-driven cam; They're extremely reliable, and keep sharp tune as a consequence.
The earlier cars were prone to extreme camber changes at the back axle so that under some conditions the rim of the wheel would dig into the road and then nothing would stop the wheel from digging in and flipping the car over.

 Chevrolet's first Corvair
Five years prior to the October, 1959, introduction of the Corvair that would become the Motor Trend magazine Car of the Year for 1960, Chevrolet produced a 'Corvair' show car for display at the 1954 Motorama.
The trio consisted of a car based on the standard Corvette roadster (with the roll up windows and bolt-on hard top that would see production in '56), a stunning Nomad wagon which led to the production version introduced in 1955, and the beautiful fastback coupe as seen in the artist's rendering at right.
Based on the production Corvette, the Corvair show car featured a fastback roof that swept back to form a distinctive arch shaped recess in the license plate area.
