The Chevrolet Corvair engine was a flat-6 (or boxer engine) piston engine used exclusively in the 1960s Chevrolet Corvair automobile.
Early engines were subject to occasional failures of the head gasket, between the heads and the cylinder barrels; this was addressed in later models by increasing the width of the sealing area and redesigning the gasket material and cross section, eliminating any issues.
Many Corvair engine fans acquired a second life after the demise of their engines, mounted bottom side out on the outside of the wheels of Corvettes involved in road-racing, in order to pull air through the brakes and keep them cool.

The Chevrolet Corvair was an automobile produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors from 1960 to 1969.
Chevrolet, aware of Nader's criticism, changed the steering shaft to a two-part design with a frangible joint late in the 1965 model year, and a collapsible steering column was provided in 1967, towards the end of the model's life span.
All were equipped by the Chevrolet factory with heavy duty suspension, four speed transmission, quicker steering ratio, positraction differentials (50 with 3.89 gears, and 50 with 3.55 when Chevrolet dropped the 3.89) and dual brake master cylinders (the first application of this by Chevrolet, to become stock equipment the next year).

The problem with Corvair was a radical design that made it too costly and "foreign" for its target audience, though it found temporary salvation by opening up an entirely different market, almost by accident.
Chevrolet's interest in a smaller, companion car was evident as early as the mid-Forties, when it developed the Cadet, a prototype 2200-pound four-door sedan of conventional design.

Holden in Australia also used straight-6 engines for a number of years in their family sedan models, with local engines ranging in size from 2.15L (132ci) in the original Holden 48-215 of 1948, to the 3.3L (202ci) six used in the 1970's and 80's, up until 1985 with the VK Commodore model.
Since the old engine was considered unsuitable, and a new engine hadn't been developed, the VL Commodore sported the 3.0L Nissan RB30 engine, the last straight six used in a Commodore.

This suggestion is based on the fact that Corvair was conceived and marketed as an economy car, and that the rear suspension that was used could have been seen as being quite adequate for a conservative, "reasonable" driving style.
For a moderately skilled driver the Corvair is a genuine ball to drive, it being possible to hustle hard into tight corners and bring the tail around with just a twitch of the wheel, counter-steering until the slide stops and the time for acceleration arrives.
This would not have been an unsurmountable problem had Chevrolet believed in the Corvair, but the fact was that several Chevrolet executives of the time did not like or understand the Corvair, and as a result Chevrolet's solution to the PR problem was to kill the line...

I did some research and decided that I would use the Corvair engines on the airplane.
