"Cheyenne Autumn" is a good movie that takes an interesting approach (for its time) to its subject matter, but it does have its flaws.
The non-Native American actors playing the Cheyenne was standard practice at the time so, although it is not PC, it is not a major flaw in the movie (although Sal Mineo seems a bit miscast and it's hard to not think of "Fantasy Island" or "The Wrath of Khan" when watching Ricardo Montalban.
"Cheyenne Autumn" is not a perfect film, but it is a good film that attempts to break with some of the Western Movie cliches in relation to the portrayal of Native Americans.

Cheyenne Autumn is a beautiful title to grace John Ford's final Western, but the film falls short of the occasion.
He's unambiguously sympathetic to the Cheyennes' resolve to bolt the reservation and trek back to their ancestral lands, while most of white society, the military, the bureaucracy, and the sensationalist press come off as insensitive, foolish, or downright hateful.
However, the Cheyenne are nobly wooden (and played by non-Indians), and it's sympathetic cavalry officer Richard Widmark and Quaker missionary Carroll Baker through whose eyes most of the epic narrative unfolds.

An action-filled old fashioned Western adventure shoot-em-up with a sexy anti-heroine, Cheyenne, a woman who is on the run from the law after shooting her no good cheatin` husband.
She's the perfect way to experience the crisp air of autumn, as she gathers a bountiful harvest of nature's jewel-like apples and fallen leaves.
Exquisitely crafted with a wealth of detail, "Autumn Majesty" is further enhanced with a handsome pewter ingot of an eagle displayed on a gleaming brass bolster.

 North: Cheyenne Autumn
Cheyenne Autumn was one of the final films made by directing legend John Ford, of The Searchers and The Quiet Man.
With retrospect however it would be entirely plausible to posit this as the finest score ever to feature in one of his movies - North always tried to accomplish something new with his scores, never ready to retread old ground or simply go with the flow.
Beautiful also, to my ears at least, is the anguished music heard for the Cheyenne Indians, who are making their way back home to Dakota from Oklahoma on a perilous journey - North was of course a master at this sort of psychological scoring - and his music here is especially affecting ("Sick Girl").

Cheyenne Autumn Review: There's a poignancy to this movie that arises not so much from the performances or directing, but from this simple fact that this is John Ford's last Western.
Cheyenne Autumn Review: This is a very slow paced melodramatic movie which I thought was too "chippy" and "self-congratulatory" for the subject of the film, the plight of the Cheyenne who were driven from their homelands.
Sure the movie is NOT all correct for Cheyenne dress and habits but John Ford did bring the Cheyenne's plight and disgraceful treatment to the big screen.

Plagued by ill health and hampered by the obtuse decisions of dull-witted studio chiefs, John Ford had reached a point in his life not unlike that of the tribe he depicts in Cheyenne Autumn, his final Western.
A large majority of the remaining 1000 members of the Cheyenne tribe forced onto an Oklahoma reservation in the 1870s have been killed by disease and starvation while waiting a year for promised government aid.
En route, the hot-blooded Red Shirt (Sal Mineo) battles with army troops, and the incidents are exaggerated by the press, which calls for a vigorous response to the "marauding savages." As the journey continues, the stoic Cheyenne must endure the rank stupidity and malign indifference of their Caucasian usurpers.
