CHM Chhelu Ram displayed most conspicuous bravery, determination, and devotion to duty during the attack by a battalion of 5th Indian Infantry Brigade on the Djebel Garci feature on the night of 19th April 1943.
Armed with a tommy gun, CHM Chhelu Ram immediately rushed forward through intense machine gun and mortar fire and single-handed silenced the post, killing three or four occupants and thus enabling the advance to continue.
CHM Chhelu Ram went to the officer's help in a completely exposed position and attended to him during which he himself was seriously wounded.

Three of them, the 1st, 4th, and medium Machine Gun Battalions fought in Eritrea in North Africa and Italy as part of the famous 4th Indian Division, whose fighting record was the finest in World War II.
