Chi Lin is a martial art from Southeast Asia that was taught in America by Grandmaster Dennis Decker.
Chi Lin also has its own form of knife fighting called Bat Sou Gung, where selected students are taught to knife fight using chalk or magic markers to illustrate hits by the knife.
Chi Lin Chuan Fa was what he taught in Morgantown, West Virginia during the mid to late 1970s.

It is believed that Kempo follows much of the same path Kung Fu takes, but in order to shorten the amount of time to train a person, methods from Karate were used as the basis to quickly allow a person to learn the basics, and techniques.
As it often takes 10 to 20 years of continuous effort to master one form of kung fu, Kempo practitioners often can be fl belted in around 3 to 5 years, depending on the instructor.

In the Kokumin Hyakta Jiten, a Japanese encycolpedia, it states that Kempo originated in some of the Jui-Jutsu ryus such as the Shibukawa, Kito, and Tenshin-Shinyo Ryus.
By the end of the 16th Century, Kempo aspect of Jui- Jutsu had become it's own art and between the 17th and 19th centuries additional ryus began teaching different styles.

The style itself is called Chi Lin, from what I understand there are a couple different divisions based on what Sifu Dennis Decker chose to pass on.
In the West Virginia Area there is the Chi Lin Chuan Fa, In the Virginia Beach Area theres the kempo, and in Florida and some other places there is Chi Lin Pai Gung.
They call this Chi Lin Chuan Fe, is this different than the Chi Lin that you are speaking of.
