	HKMBA - Chi Ma Wan
		The trail is natural until you reach Shui Tseng Wan, at which point the natural surface is replaced by concrete.
		This loop was opened in 1998 after lobbying by the HKMBA to improve access on the Chi Ma Wan Peninsula and is a very gentle ride apart from the middle section, around 1/5 of the route, which involves a fair amount of bicycle portage.
		At this point you can either follow the left hand trail and do the full Chi Ma Wan Trail, which is a further two hour ride (longer in summer), or call it a day and take the right hand trail which will bring you back to the trail cross-roads just mentioned.

		The Chi Ma Wan expansion is part of an overall plan to redevelop some of Hong Kong's old and outdated prisons to ease overcrowding and improve rehabilitation services.
		The Chi Ma Wan plan, which has been on the drawing board for some time, was revealed Wednesday by newly appointed Commissioner of Correctional Services Kwok Leung-ming at a media gathering in Cape Collinson Correctional Institution.
		Kwok said the Chi Ma Wan expansion plan could follow the construction of a new prison at Lo Wu that will be completed by the end of 2009 and accommodate 1,200 inmates.

	Chi Ma Wan Trail
		The Chi Ma Wan (Sesame Bay) Peninsula is bypassed by the Lantau Trail, and as such is often left untrod by hikers too.
		This means that its paths are not overrun by tour groups on holidays, and quiet solitude can be found on any day of the week.
		The hike can be started from this point, or from the Chi Ma Wan ferry pier which is reachable by the less frequent inter-island ferry.

		We took the No. 3M bus from Tung Chung to Pui O from where we took the Chi Ma Wan country trail to get to the Mong Tung Wan porpoise viewing points.
		We couldn't help but take the walk at an easy pace because of the stunning scenery along the way and in the end, we reached the viewing points 30 minutes later than scheduled.
		Mong Tung Wan has two porpoise viewing points: one good for seeing the waters around Mong Tung Wan and Pui O, the other for Chi Ma Wan and Shek Kwu Chau.

	Plans to ease prison overcrowding in hand
		Works on rebuilding Lo Wu Correctional Institution will start next year for completion in 2009 while improvements to other institutions, including the two on Chi Ma Wan, are being planned to ease overcrowding, Commissioner of Correctional Services Pang Sung-yuen says.
		Noting the number of prisoners and inmates is expected to rise to 14,200 in 2024 from the existing 12,000, he said the capacity of Lo Wu Correctional Institution will be expanded to 1,400 places from the existing 200 places to cope with the growth.
		For Chi Sun and Chi Ma Wan Correctional Institutions, the total number of places will be doubled to about 1,600.

		Eighteen trampers enjoyed an excellent day's hiking over Lo Yan Shan, the jewel in the crown of Chi Ma Wan Peninsular, a thousand steps or more (or so it felt) and a particular favourite of Chris Bailey if I understood her well.
		We welcomed Noreen from downunder, but she found the pace a bit too fast and wisely decided to take the boat back from Chi Ma Wan ferry pier.

		As is often the case with old village houses, it's hard to tell whether they're inhabited or not, but the terraces in front are certainly fallow.
		Shortly a warning sign in Vietnamese gives an idea of what lies over the hill: the Chi Ma Wan detention centre was once a camp for boat people.
		Above it there is nothing but a helipad and an old target practice range; we turn right onto a rough track and carry on under the trees.

	Relax Zone Print
		The South Lantau country park includes the Lantau Peak, the south side of Sunset Peak, Sze Shan, Chi Ma Wan Peninsula, Shui Hau Peninsula and the southwestern section of Lantau Island.
		On the peninsula, there are large areas of planted trees (such as the pines), and along the way you can watch beautiful butterflies and can hear the bird songs.
		The scenery from the hiking trail is extraordinary as well, as the Shek Kwu Chau and Cheung Chau in addition to the bay and beaches along the island can be clearly seen from there.
