Those chapters of Chi Phi with hyphenated names indicate that upon the reorganization of that chapter, its prior chapter name was already taken by an existing chapter.
The period was one of strong sectional feeling, and the union of the Northern and Southern Orders of Chi Phi in 1874, so shortly after the conflict, bears strong testimony to the strength of the common ideals which drew the two orders into union.
Chi Phi was among the first to forget sectionalism and to extend the hand of brotherhood after the war.

The first of these older organizations, the Chi Phi Society, was established at the College of New Jersey, later Princeton University, on December 24, 1824, by Robert Baird (clergyman), then a tutor in the college and later a prominent Presbyterian clergyman.
Except for a brief period in 1911, three Chi Phis (Joseph Mackey Brown, John Marshall Slaton and Nathaniel E. Harris) held the office of Governor in the State of Georgia from 1909 to 1917.
During the same period, another Chi Phi, Hiram W. Johnson served as Governor of California and was later elected to five terms as a U.S. Senator.

The allegations stem from an incident in January 1998 in which the Chi Phi chapter at Georgia Tech is alleged to have brought its pledge class to UGA's Chi Phi chapter, where some 30 members of the local chapter are said to have engaged in acts of hazing against the Georgia Tech Chi Phi pledges.
At the time of the alleged offense, UGA's Chi Phi chapter already was serving a four-year probation from 1995.
Additionally, in fall 1999 Chi Phi was found to be responsible for a keg party where alcohol was provided by a pledge trainer and for the public drunkenness of an underaged pledge for whom alcohol was purchased at a downtown bar by a member of the fraternity.
